Most people fly Pokhara to Jomsom in the morning, before the Kali Gandaki wind gets up, then travel north by jeep or on foot. The road now reaches Lo Manthang, so what was a two-week walk can be done in days — which is either the point or the loss, depending on why you came.
Kagbeni, Muktinath and Jomsom sit in Lower Mustang and need no restricted-area permit. North of Kagbeni is Upper Mustang, where entry is capped, permitted by the day and only issued to travellers with a registered guide. Your local arranges this before you arrive; it cannot be sorted out at the checkpoint.
Mustang's season runs opposite to the rest of Nepal's. Because the monsoon dies against the Himalaya before it reaches here, July and August — washed out everywhere else — are among the best months, and the Tiji festival at Lo Manthang draws people in late spring.
