Bhairahawa's international airport is half an hour away, and the Indian border at Sunauli is close enough that Lumbini is a natural first or last stop on a crossing between Nepal and India. From Kathmandu it is a flight plus a short drive, or a long day on the road.
The sacred garden — the Maya Devi Temple, the marker stone and the Ashoka Pillar — sits at the south end. North of it stretches the monastic zone, where Buddhist nations have each built in their own tradition, laid out along a central canal. It is several kilometres end to end, which is why almost nobody walks all of it.
Lumbini is a day, or two if you are here to sit rather than to see. Most travellers pair it with Chitwan a few hours east, which makes a comfortable week in the lowlands without returning to the hills in between.
