Almost every visitor to Nepal lands at Tribhuvan International, on the eastern edge of the city. Arrivals is busy and the taxi rank outside it is busier, which is why an airport pickup is the single most requested job on this page — your local waits inside with your name and you skip the negotiation entirely.
The valley is small, the traffic is not. Taxis are metered in principle and negotiated in practice; ride-hailing apps work well and settle the price before you get in. For the old cities — Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares — walking is the only sensible option once you are inside the lanes.
Thamel puts the gear shops, trekking agencies and late kitchens at your door. Patan is quieter, greener and full of working metal studios. Boudha, around the stupa, is the choice if you are here for the monasteries and want mornings that start with circumambulation rather than motorbikes.
