Lukla's airstrip is short, high and weather-bound, and flights are cancelled often enough that every itinerary should carry a spare day at each end. In the busy seasons departures may run from Ramechhap rather than Kathmandu, which adds a pre-dawn drive. A helicopter is the expensive way out of a cancellation, and it is not always flying either.
The walk is not technical; the altitude is the whole difficulty. Standard itineraries build in rest days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, and they are not padding — skipping them is how people end up walking back down. Every guide listed here is altitude-trained and carries a way of calling for help that does not depend on a phone signal.
Lodges are simple and get simpler with height: a bed, a dining room around a stove, and charging and hot water charged by the item. Above Namche there is no road, no bank and nothing that arrives except on a back or a yak, which is why prices climb with the path.
